PUMP, the operator of the shared kickboard service "XingXing," has become the first in the industry to successfully localize the production of its kickboard batteries.
Earlier this year, PUMP partnered with PeopleWorks—Korea's largest battery pack manufacturer—to initiate the localization project.
PUMP has completed the development of a battery specifically designed for shared kickboards, featuring enhanced safety compared to previous models.
The battery utilizes LG Chem cells, which are supplied to major electric vehicle manufacturers and have a proven track record of safety in overseas markets.
This domestically produced battery (Model No. PWS-PCPUMP-O) will be phased into the existing XingXing fleet starting in July.
It will also be installed in all new kickboards introduced in the second half of the year and used for replacement batteries.
To localize battery production, PUMP defined specifications and BMS protocols tailored to the characteristics of shared electric scooters, ensuring compatibility with existing products.
The company participated in planning enhancements to extend battery lifespan and facilitate easier maintenance compared to previous models.
Kim Sang-hoon, CTO of PUMP, stated, "With batteries manufactured in China, risks remained due to a lack of transparency in quality control, even when safe cells were used." He added, "By manufacturing battery packs using proven cells from Korea's LG Chem and implementing rigorous quality control, we have significantly reduced potential risks."
